Advisories for Indian Students Planning to go Abroad

Some advisories and suggestions for Indian Students planning to go abroad before finalising their education destination, along with some country specific advisories:

  • Students are advised to check the genuineness of the University (if the University is fake or not). They can contact the Indian Embassy/ High Commission in the respective country for advice/verification of the university. They are advised to trust only government verified institutes’ websites. {NOTE – Trustworthy institute websites generally have a suffix that contains the country abbreviation (e.g. for Germany - .de, for France - .fr, for Netherlands - .nl and for South Korea- .kr)}. Students are also advised to take into account the institute’s official recognition and academic reputation. They must ensure that the degree they earn will have recognition in India or any other country they choose to work or study in.
  • Students are advised to check the official websites of Indian Embassy/High Commission in their country of choice for specific advisories with regard to study/travel with in the country. They must also verify and fill all required documents.{NOTE – Students must ensure that all the documents are translated by a certified translator, if specified by the institution or by the Embassy of the country they are travelling to.}
  • Students must consider the language requirements in their chosen country. When planning to study in an English-speaking country for higher education, students will most likely have to submit IELTS or TOEFL scores. Several countries require students to produce a valid health insurance for obtaining a Visa. If students already have medical insurance, they must ensure that it provides international coverage, and covers medical evacuation/repatriation (travel expenses for returning home case the medical condition warrants it)
  • Students must ensure that their Educational Agent/Counsellor is legitimate. They should check the veracity of the agent by gathering all relevant information from both online and offline sources. They should be aware of fraudulent agents in India who may deceive them when applying to foreign universities; they should only hire certified agents. This will save students from facing unwanted troubles like monetary loss, loss of documents, being misguided, etc.
  • Students are advised to register at the Pravasi Rishta Portal, to maintain a regular communication with the Indian Embassy/Consulates in their country of study. For redressal of any grievance, students may use the MADAD Portal, Consular Grievance Monitoring Redressal Mechanism run by the Ministry of External Affairs of India. The MADAD portal for overseas Indians provides a platform for filing consular grievances. It helps to monitor the status of a complaint filed at the concerned Indian Embassy/High Commission. It also enables the authorities to provide the students with prompt assistance in case of any emergency.
  • They should stay connected with their family and friends back home. They should prioritize their physical and mental well-being throughout their stay overseas.
  • Students are also advised to check the Student Handbook for Studying Abroad
