Cooperative Movement in Sikkim dates back to the enactment of Sikkim Cooperative Societies Act 1955. Under this Act, the present ‘Denzong Agriculture Cooperative Society Ltd’., 22 Primary Agriculture Credit Cooperative Societies and few ex-soldiers Consumer Cooperative Societies were organized. With Sikkim joining the mainstream of India in 1975, a full-fledged Cooperation Department was established and a new and comprehensively framed Sikkim Cooperative Societies Act, 1978 replaced the old Act of which further followed by enforcement of Sikkim Cooperative Societies Rules of 1981, which gave rise to the growth of Cooperative Societies in Sikkim. The Apex federations namely ‘Sikkim Consumers Cooperative Society Ltd.,1975’, Gangtok and ‘Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd (SMU), 1980 have been playing significant role in respective sector. Total Cooperative Societies registered in Sikkim are 3,784 with the membership of 11,6021. State comprises 6 districts, of which Namchi has highest number of societies (1,173) and highest number of members (36,066). Labour sector is the prominent sector which has 73.55% share of the total societies functioning in the state. There are 418 primary milk producers’ cooperatives affiliated to Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd. More than 91% of Gram Panchayats are covered under area of operation of PACS. Majority of the cooperatives are active in rural areas (94%).
