NAGALAND

Nagaland is predominantly agricultural economy with 71.14 per cent of the population dependent on agriculture. Agriculture is one of the significant contributors to the Gross State Domestic Product and is the largest employer of the workforce in the State. The State of Nagaland can be considered a late starter to embrace and spread of cooperative movement. The real effort for organizing the cooperative movement in the State started only after Nagaland attained statehood in 1963. The diversification of agricultural activities to crops such as rubber, oilseeds, sugarcane, coffee and other horticulture crops (pineapples, kiwi, persimmon, etc.) in recent years is seen as a significant move towards production for commercial purposes. In the result, Agriculture & Allied Cooperative stands second with 2,046 societies among all primary cooperatives present in the state. As it is an agricultural economy, a large number of cooperatives (6,984) lies in the rural areas whereas only 1,135 cooperatives are in urban areas. Dimapur district has the highest societies (1,166) with the membership of 25,579. Zunbeboto district has 874 cooperatives with maximum members 82,499. Multipurpose cooperatives have maximum share 27.52% of total cooperatives, while PACS have maximum membership (33.09%). Of these societies, 52 societies are affiliated with StCB/DCCB. The recent efforts of the Ministry of Cooperation, is poised to transform cooperatives in Nagaland.
