Cooperation Department in Mizoram has been playing a vital role to overcome the problem of common people and become self-reliance through cooperative. In order to make the Cooperative Movement in Mizoram more effective, the Mizoram Cooperative Societies Act, 2006 was prepared in line with the then Mizoram Cooperative Societies Rules 1996 was also prepared under the framework of the legislated Act, 1991 and came into force w.e.f. 12th November, 1996. There are at present 1,228 registered Primary Cooperative Societies and 10 State level Cooperative Societies scattered all over the state serving the people for their economic upliftment and improving the economic condition. The Cooperation Department is working to strengthen and enhance the progress of Cooperative Movement within the State which is broadly aimed at Socio-Economic development of the people of Mizoram with special emphasis to achieve the objectives like Cooperative Farming in agriculture, horticulture and allied activities, strengthening of Cooperative Credit Structure, obtaining credit facilities from financial institutions. Total number of members in 1,228 primary cooperative is 49,531. A total of 802 societies comes under rural areas while 426 societies are active in urban areas. There are 474 functional cooperatives in Aizawl district which is highest in any district of the state. It has also maximum membership of 18,715 members. Notably, 9767 (19.72%) members of cooperatives are there in Agriculture and Allied sector.
