Cooperative movement in Tripura started with the registration of Swasti Samabaya Samity Ltd., in 1949. But the movement got momentum in 1978 after the enactment of Tripura Cooperative Societies Act, 1974 and the Tripura Cooperative Societies Rules, 1976. The cooperative movement in Tripura encompasses the economic activities with special focus on the economically backward classes including tribal population of the State. Total primary cooperatives in the state are 3,142 having 5,11,878 members. Multipurpose Cooperative has highest share of societies viz., 623. There are 299 PACS (9.52%) having 76.6% of membership. Out of 299 PACS, 238 PACS are affiliated with StCB. Out of 8 districts, West Tripura has highest number of societies (874) with highest membership of 82,947. Around 1,663 cooperatives have been registered in the period 2011-2023 which is more than 50% of the total cooperatives registered since 1949.
