JHARKHAND

Cooperatives in Jharkhand are dedicated to fostering comprehensive economic and social development for small and marginal farmers, artisans, and various societies. Their operations aim to uplift the people of the state, with a particular focus on the tribal community. Recognizing agriculture as the lifeline of the state’s residents, cooperatives have played a pivotal role in this endeavour. The Cooperative Department’s overarching objective is to provide short and medium-term production credit through a network of LAMPS (Large Area Multipurpose Societies) and PACS (Primary Agriculture Credit Societies), facilitated by the Jharkhand State Cooperative Bank Ltd. Ranchi, District Central Co-operative Bank Ltd. Dhanbad, and Vyapar Mandal Sahyog Samities etc. Presently Jharkhand has 11,409 cooperative societies, out of which 7,267 are a functional, 3,952 are non-functional, and 190 are under liquidation. Of these, 9,773 societies are located in the rural sector, while 1,636 operate in the urban sector, collectively providing membership to 20,92,988 individuals. In operational sectors, Primary Agriculture Credit Societies (PACS) lead with 4,411societies and 14,38,615 members. PACS in the state function as multiservice centres, serving as one-stop shops for farmers by offering storage, procurement, and marketing facilities. The Women’s Welfare Cooperative Society, covering 11.6% of cooperatives, boasts 1,06,061 memberships. Notably, when examining the coverage of Gram Panchayats (GPs) on the National Cooperatives Database (NCD) portal, PACS have a remarkable 98.3% coverage, with Giridih district having the highest number of GPs with PACS. The audit of 924 PACS reveals that 75.9% are affiliated with banks.
