The first cooperative society of our country was registered in 1905 at Kanaginahal village of Gadag district in Karnataka. Since then, cooperative movement has been playing a pivotal role in improving the socio- economic condition of people and expanding itself to almost all sectors of economic activities, both in rural and urban areas. Karnataka continues to successfully provide timely and affordable credit to farmers, SHGs etc., and has a vibrant dairy sector under brand ‘Nandini’. Government of Karnataka provides subsidy to support these sectors which directly uplift the socio-economic status of rural/urban poor. Total 44,005 cooperative societies with membership of 3,33,14,744 are operational in 31 districts. Out of these, 30,469 societies are in rural areas while 13,536 societies are in urban areas. Belagavi district has the highest number of societies (6,248). Dairy Cooperative sector tops the list with 17,514 societies with membership of 32,37,337 followed by PACS (6,081) having highest number of members i.e. 81,97,503 (24.61%). PACS cover 98.63% of Gram Panchayats in the state.
