Cooperatives have played a vital role in improving the economic conditions of farmersand accelerating the pace of development in Punjab. The Department of Cooperation, Punjab is performing its duties as per the provisions of the Punjab Cooperative Societies Act 1961, the Punjab Cooperative Societies Rules, 1963 and the Punjab Self-Supporting Cooperative Societies Act 2006. There are 19,031 cooperative societies functioning under various sectors across 23 districts in the state. The sectors with highest number of cooperative societies are Dairy (7043), Primary Agriculture & Credit Societies (3953) covering almost all the Gram Panchayats in the State and Labour (2823). Cooperative Sector of Punjab State is vibrant with 34,16,756 members actively participating in the cooperative movement contributing to its growth and development.There are 3953 PACS in the state serving around 23.5 lakh farmers providing timely agricultural credit and other Agricultural inputs like fertilizers, pesticides, seeds etc.
