The Cooperative Movement was launched in the erstwhile Union Territory of Goa, Daman and Diu way back in the year 1962, for the upliftment of the down trodden and weaker section of the societies. Soon, it spread over different aspect and sectors such as agriculture, credit, consumers, housing, dairy farming and other types of cooperative societies. All the Cooperative Societies registered in the State of Goa are governed under the provisions of Goa Cooperative Societies Act, 2001 and the Cooperative Societies Rules 2003 made thereunder. As of now, in all 5433 cooperative societies have been registered in the State of Goa with total 15,78,357 members working in the state. Out of which, 4,315 are functional and 1,032 are non-functional while only 86 are under liquidation. Out of all the sectors, Housing Cooperative sector is the most prominent in the state with 53.64% (2914) registered societies while Credit & Thrift sector has highest membership with 46.70% of total membership. There are 93 PACS functioning in the state and they cover all the 191 Gram Panchayats in the state. Fishery sector has 26 cooperative societies and they cover 94 out of 191 Gram Panchayats.
