Lakshadweep Cooperative Societies Regulation, 1960 was enacted to regularise the matters related to Cooperative Societies in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. Now, the Lakshadweep Cooperative Societies Regulation, 2022 is enacted for regulation of registration, incorporation and management of Cooperative Societies in the Union territory of Lakshadweep and to repeal the Laccadive, Minicoy and Amindivi Islands Cooperative Societies Regulation, 1960 and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. India’s smallest Union Territory Lakshadweep is an archipelago consisting of 36 islands with an area of 32 sq. km. There are only 35 Primary Cooperative Societies registered in the UT of Lakshadweep with the total membership of 84,393. The only district, Lakshadweep has these 35 Primary Cooperatives which are located in rural areas. Of these, 23 societies are functional while 12 societies are non-functional. Primary Marketing Cooperatives has maximum 10 (28.57%) societies having maximum membership of 62,833 (74.45%) followed by Credit and Thrift Societies having 9 (25.71%) societies. There are 10 Gram Panchayats, out of which 3 Gram Panchayats are covered with fishery cooperatives.
