Tamil Nadu has played a significant role in India’s cooperative movement. The nation’s first cooperative law was enacted on 25th March, 1904 and first cooperative credit society was established in Thirur, Thiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu on 21st August 1904. Over the years, cooperative structure in the State has grown systematically and at present functions vibrantly in 38 districts under the Registrar of Cooperative Societies and 15 other Functional Registrars with 17 Apex societies, 216 Central Societies and over 21,210 Primary Cooperative Societies. In Tamil Nadu, the Dairy sector is the largest sector wherein 9,730 Cooperative Societies are functioning. With Salem district having the highest number of Dairy Cooperative Societies (804). There is a three-tire structure in Dairy sector. The Primary Milk Producers Cooperative Societies (MPCS) at the village level. The District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Unions (DCMPU) are at District level which takes care of the Chilling Centers. The Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation (TCMPF) is the apex level society in which all the DCMPUs in the State are members. Currently, there are 4,518 PACS functioning in the state with highest number of PACS(244) in the Thanjavur District. The Fisheries Cooperative Societies play a pivotal role in the upliftment of fishermen/fisherwomen in the State. The Department is also executing various welfare schemes for fishermen/fisherwomen. About 7.64 lakh fishermen/ fisherwomen have enrolled in 1,451 primary Cooperatives. Fishermen Cooperativesocieties are operating, 62 full-time and 12 part-time fair price shops.
