Though the Union Territory of Puducherry joined in the cooperative movement after the merger with Indian Union in 1954, it had made a rapid growth by achieving its desired goals as the ‘Cooperation’ has given due importance in all Five-Year Plans. In 4 districts of Puducherry namely Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, a total 457 cooperative societies are registered under various sectors with 4,63,777 members. Almost 67% (305) of the total cooperatives are operational in the Pondicherry district. The societies are almost equally spread among rural and urban areas. There are 243 societies in the rural areas and 214 societies in the urban areas. The prominent sectors are Dairy, Credit & Thrift and Fisheries having 120, 73 and 68 societies respectively. PACS constitute 12.25% (56) of the total cooperatives having 76,564. Consumer cooperative has the highest number of members (1,32,304) among all sectors. There are 108 Gram Panchayats in the UT. Around 95% of Gram Panchayats are covered by PACS while 66.50% are covered by Dairy Cooperatives. Notably, all the 56 PACS are affiliated to Federation/ Union.
