The Cooperative Department of A&N Administration functions under the control and supervision of Registrar of Cooperative Societies who has been vested with the statutory powers under A&N Islands Cooperative Societies Regulation 1973, and the Rules framed there-under in 1974 under the Administrative Head of Secretary (Cooperation)-cum-RCS.Registrar of Cooperative Societies assisted by 03 Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies posted one each at Headquarter, Port Blair, at Car Nicobar for the Nicobar District and at May abunder for the entire North & Middle Andaman.As per National Cooperative Database, there are 2,217 registered cooperative societies spread across the UT of A&N Islands. The primary cooperatives are 2,204 out of which1196 (54%) are functional, 859 are non-functional and 149 are under liquidation. Apartfrom Primary Cooperatives, there are 5 State Federations, 7 District Federations and 1State Cooperative Bank. Majority of the societies i.e., 1,650 are present in rural areas,while the remaining 554 societies are in urban areas.South Andamans has the maximum number of societies i.e., 1,316 with total membership of 1,05,267 followed by North and Middle Andaman having 745 societies and Nicobar Island having 143 societies. Among primary societies, the labour cooperative sector has the maximum number of societies (1,248) having 38,684 members. Further, it has been observed that cooperatives operating in tourism sector are only 46, but they have highest percentage of members (37%) followed by labour cooperatives (26.78%).
