The Cooperatives in Union Territory Chandigarh have played an integral role in advancing  the socio-economic development of its residents. Operating under the provisions of the Punjab Cooperative Societies Act, 1961, and the Punjab Cooperative Societies Rules,1963 (applicable to UT Chandigarh), the Registrar, Cooperative Societies, UT, Chandigarh,oversees the registration of diverse Cooperative Societies. As per the National Cooperative Database, a national level repository of data on cooperatives, Chandigarh comprises 476 Primary Cooperative Societies, with 196 currently operational, 221 non-functional, and 59 undergoing liquidations. All the Cooperative Societies are situated in urban areas. Across all the functional sectors, there are 49,721 members, wherein the Housing and Cooperative holds the highest number of societies (48.5%), with 19,075 members, followed by the Credit and Thrift Society (29.6%) with 14,454 members. Other notable cooperative sectors in UT Chandigarh include Agro-Processing/Industrial Cooperative (5.2%), Labour Cooperatives (4.8%), and Primary Agriculture Credit Societies (3.6%).
